Luxury Tour of South America

In this sample itinerary you will learn about the unique sights, sounds, and experiences of South America. From taking a morning tour of the historic Cordano tavern to marveling at the grand architecture of Buenos Aires, you’re guaranteed to find a wealth of fun, memorable, and engaging activities. And you will be absorbed in the natural beauty and historical significance of the region.

Day 1: Fly to Lima, Peru

Fly from London to Lima. Regional connections available. Transfer to the Casa Andina Premium Miraflores for 2 nights.

Day 2: Lima

Morning tour of Lima. Explore this sprawling metropolis in all its glory, stopping at the local Cordano tavern, Case Aliaga, the local Market, and the Cathedral.

Day 3: Fly to Cuzco • Sacred Valley

Fly to Cuzco, the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city and the gateway to Machu Picchu. Then transfer to the Sacred Valley, just 15km north of Cuzco. The region is considered one of the most important historical places in South America. It was home to the Inca people and much of their stonemasonry and architecture still stands today.

Stay at the Casa Andina Premium Sacred Valley for 1 night.

Day 4: Machu Picchu

Take the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. Then further explore the spectacular city of Inca. Stay at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo for 1 night.

Day 5: Cuzco

Enjoy morning Leisure. Or further explore Machu Picchu, which you must buy an extra ticket for at the time of booking. In the afternoon, return to Cuzco by train and stay 2 nights at the Casa Andina Premium Cuzco, a luxury hotel just 5 minutes away from Plaza de Armas and a few steps away from other main tourist attractions.

Day 6: Cuzco

Morning tour of Cuzco and the San Blas Islands. There are about 378 islands in the archipelago which are scattered around roughly 100 square miles. Most of the islands have no inhabitants, but a few larger ones are home to the native people known as the Kuna’s.

In the afternoon, enjoy afternoon leisure or optional excursions.

Day 7: Luxury Train to Puno

Take the Belmond Andean Explorer train across the altiplano plain to Puno. In the comfort of a luxury train carriage, you will marvel at the desolate beauty of the flat, sprawling plains of the altiplano, which contains few landscape features but is still captivating for its stark, minimalist beauty and grandeur. Along the way, you will stop by the archaeological site of Raqchi, the resting place of the Inca Trail, and watch the sunset at La Raya.

You’ll stay aboard the train overnight in a bunk bed cabin, with dinner provided. You can upgrade to the optional twin-bedded cabin from £115.

Day 8: Lake Titicaca, Bolivia

Wake up to the sunrise at Lake Titicaca. Travel by road to Huatajata in Bolivia, a homely village with tranquil lake waters and plenty of opportunities for respite and relaxation. Along the way, you will visit Copacabana and a nearby shrine, the Our Lady of Copacabana.

You will then see a cultural exhibition at the Andean Roots Eco Village, a small and charming museum where you will learn how the reed boats are made and meet a spiritual Kallawaya healer, the naturopathic healers of Inca kings.

Stay overnight at the Inca Utama on the lake shores. Then observe the southern constellations from an astronomical observatory. The hotel has two restaurants, wonderful views over the lake, and small eco-villages where people handcraft traditional reed boats.

Day 9: Uros Iruitos • La Paz

Enjoy a hydrofoil cruise to the Uro Iruitos floating reed islands. Visit the Quewaya Sustainable Project, which promotes sustainable practices while still upholding local traditions.

Then proceed overland to La Paz for an afternoon city tour. Known for its lively and bustling atmosphere, La Paz is rich with street marches, a wide variety of street vendors, and regular live performances.

Along the way, you can visit the Moon Valley, a natural, sprawling rock formation shaped by erosion, giving off the impression of being on a faraway planet. You will also see the Witches’ Market, which is run by local witch doctors called yatiri, who sell potions, dried frogs, and various medicinal plants.

Day 10 & 11: Fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina

Fly to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, a grandiose city full of cosmopolitan flair and a distinctive European character. Transfer to the Alvear Art Hotel for 2 nights.

Take a morning city tour, including a visit to the cathedral, the La Boca district (home to the birthplace of the tango), and the Recoleta Cemetery. The cemetery has more than 3,000 above-ground burial sites, which are ornate, intricately detailed, and often tower over you in a powerful, intimidating manner, giving off the impression of a labyrinthian maze.

Day 12 & 13: Fly to Iguazú / Iguaçu

Fly to Iguazú and stay for 2 nights at the Gran Meliá Iguazú in the park. There is an optional upgrade to a falls-view room from £125. The Iguazú Falls stretches for miles, to the point where the, more than, 250 separate falls are located on both the Argentinian and Brazil side. While here, you will get the chance to visit both sides of the falls, each one offering you memorable panoramic views.

Day 14: Fly to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Fly to Rio, located in the southeastern, tropical zone of South America. Considered one of the most beautiful and interesting urban centers in the world, marvel at the golden sandy beaches and lush misty forests.

Transfer to the Fairmont Rio de Janeiro Copacabana for 2 nights. Standard rooms have a deluxe city and partial ocean room. But you can upgrade to a deluxe ocean front room from £80. The hotel is inspired by the glamor of the 1950s, featuring 10 room categories with a balcony, Gold Rooms with private lounges, and two swimming pools, spas, a fitness center, a restaurant, bars, and meeting rooms.

Day 15: Rio de Janeiro

Enjoy a full-day tour of Rio de Janeiro. You will visit Corcovado, which sits at the top of the city and is home to the famed Christ the Redeemer statue.

You’ll also visit Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car, which has been registered as a Natural Landmark for its stunning beauty and geological significance. The mountain is 1,300 feet high and offers panoramic views that are unique to this specific location.
